The first World Boxing Qualification Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics gets underway in Busto Arsizio, Italy on Sunday.

India’s nine-member boxing squad will be led by two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa, who will compete in the men’s 63.5kg category. Live streaming of the final two days will be available in India on Olympics.com.

Each country can obtain a maximum of one quota per weight category for the Paris 2024 Olympics. India, having secured four quotas at the Asian Games, can obtain up to nine Olympic quotas in Busto Arsizio.

In Italy, countries can only enter boxers in the specific weight categories in which they have not already obtained a quota at a previous tournament like the Asian Games.

India’s squad for the Paris Olympics boxing qualifier in Italy includes seven men and two women.

Along with Shiva Thapa, the Indian men’s boxing squad includes the 2023 Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal and World Championship bronze medallists Mohammed Hussamuddin, Deepak Bhoria and Nishant Dev. Reigning national champions Lakshya Chahar and Sanjeet Kumar are also in the team.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jaismine Lamboria and youth world champion Ankushita Boro are the two Indian women boxers slated to compete.

Women’s boxers Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) obtained the quotas at the Asian Games last year. The four weight categories will not have Indian boxers in Italy.

The Busto Arsizio meet will have 49 Olympics quotas – 28 in the men’s and 21 in women’s categories – up for grabs. All 13 weight divisions will have four quotas on offer, except for women’s 57kg (two quotas) and women’s 60kg (three quotas).

A further 45 to 51 boxers can obtain quotas through the second World Qualification Tournament, which will be held in Bangkok from May 26 to June 2.
